Anyone using (or trying to) 2007?

Tempted to give it a spin - got Beta 2 sitting alongside PCW but the blurb suggests it's quite a different animal to the Orifice we know and love....?

Apparently they've invented a whole new way for users to loose all their toolbars, should be ace!

If you're considering drilling your own teeth out or stapling your eyelids together as good fun, you might find this interesting

Still getting used to them, but they work very well.

A considerable visual update, but all sorts of improvements in Security and XML interoprativity.

I like it a lot so far, but be warned, anything you create with it has to be saved 'backwards' as the 2007 isn't compatible with 2003 etc.

Try it. You'll like it.

Do you think I'm asking for trouble if I load up 2007 in a seperate directory/hard drive and have a play without overwriting/changing my current set up?

What a shock.

I'll stick with Open Office, thanks. Bill Gates is quite rich enough already.

Last time I looked at Open Office it was OK, but no better than that. That was a while ago, though - does anyone have a link to the current best version for Windows?

Not a problem.

However, I quite like my ease of rollout and ability to send and receive documents with 99% of the world

I've tried OpenOffice, however, fine for at home, but in a corporate environment, Office is King.

I wouldn't ever try to train any staff to use a completely different office suite, knowing full well they need to have Office on hand anyhow when someone sends them something from within Office.

Can you imagine the support overheads?

I thought I was installing just excel 2007 but somehow the whole of Office 2007 got installed and while most of it will happilly run in parellel with 2003, Outlook wont or can't and I now can't get back to Outlook 2003. Not currently a problem as it seems to read the same PST files and link to the exchange server OK but if it goes pear shaped I cant imagine I'll be popular with IT support.

However I like the re-arranged menu bars in excel although it does take a while to find everything and I still havn't found an icon for print preview.

And if you use pivot tables created in 2007 even saving the file as 2003 doesn't enable you to edit the pivot table in 2003.

I assume you're being sarcastic there...

OpenOffice can and does save MS formats by default if you want it to, I've had no problems with interoperability. Plus you can save directly as PDF if you really need something to be read in the right format. It does lack a lot of the polish of MS office though, it still feels a little bit slow and clunky even in comparison to other non-MS office programs. They really need to get that sorted IMO esp. the speed.

I've got it running under Vista in a VM - the new interface looks great, but it'll scare the bejesus out of some of our users.

(BTW VMWare rocks)

That was my impression of it before, but I'm planning to give it another go.

Is the current one version 2.0.2 from openoffice.org, or should I be looking elsewhere?

VMWare is your friend - install a fresh copy of your OS into a Virtual Machine and install Office 2007 on that. No effect to your current setup.

Not sure if we're on the same wavelength here. But I didn't mention that I'm currently using Office XP (Not sure where Openffice came into it....)

So do I. That's why I use Open Office. It's more compatible with Word than Word is. I sat in a user forum last week listening to the nightmare our legal department has with the documents that get emailed to them in a zillion different incompatible versions of Word. A situation that MS engender deliberately, BTW, in order to force poeople to buy pointless new versions of MS Office.

And the training issue is a red herring. Anyone who can use MS Word can use OO. I've never had any training on either, BTW.
