I installed, what I guess is the large MS update the other week. Now when I log on, the PC seems to hang after accepting the password. Now if you CTRL-ALT-BRK, it un-hangs and brings up the task manager and returns you to the desktop. So, problem sort of solved, but this can't be the correct behaviour. Any idea?

You should be able to uninstall the patch via add/remove programs in control pannel - unless it's the WGA patch thats causing the problem. It is forboden to uninstall that one.

... although it seems that it is trivially easy to uninstall it manually, if you want to.

Remove a few files, and a registry hack and job done

A few weeks back I had a patch which quite clearly wasn't going to complete the installation. I shut down anyway to all sorts of nonsense about illegal copies of XP. Ignored it and 8 patches installed with no problems a couple of days ago.

I had this recently - latest Microsoft update seems to have fixed it
