How do they do this? I have been getting junk e-mails where the sender and recipient are supposedly the same, ie me. One of the company e-mail accounts is sales@ and another info@, and they have both received e-mails apparently sent by themselves to themselves. If I select the e-mails as junk I block my own mail, which is not good.

If have run a couple of up to date virus and spyware checkers with no reported problems.

On the positive side, if I can hijack some of our competitors e-mail accounts I could have a load of fun!

The sender address can be set to any address you like. It sounds as if there is a spammer who has decided to set the sender address the same as the destination address, for some reason. It doesn't mean that the message actually came from you, or that you will get emails sent to other people.

I've get the same kind of mails over here.
Sender addresses always end with one of my domain names.
Easy to filter out though...

As v8s correctly points out, the standards set out for email delivery do not take into account the fact that people are gits, and so there are no limits on what can be specified in the "from" clause of an email.

So yes, you could pretend to be your competitor or if you felt so inclined "billgates@microsoft.com" - however depending on what you write don't expect to get away with it, you can be traced whatever you do...

Any decent anti-spam package should be able to catch rubbish like this coming in, if it's a business account speak to either your ISP or whoever sold you your mailserver software, if you host it in house.

checkout the full headers of the email, they will tell u the isp

if u do it to competitors and they find out, you might get kicked off the isp that you use to spam with
