how can i run about 20meters of cable through the garden?
I am going to have a log cabin at the end of the garden for my office, but the main phone point and router are going to be inside the house under the stairs. I could use wireless and a directional adaptor, but a cable will be faster (the file server is also under the stairs).

thanks

Someone will correct me i'm wrong but I think you'll be ok with CAT 5e UTP cable.

I'd put in 2 or 3 runs while your at it though just in case you can need extra options in the future.

You want 20m of 'Direct Burial' Cat5e

You could run conduit if it terminates at both ends in the dry (i.e. inside the buildings) and use normal UTP.

Are you planning on running PSTN over CAT5e?

If so, dont be tempted by those splitter/combiner things that allow you to run the 4 conductors of 10/100 and telephony over the same cable. Every time the phone rings you get a nice 60v spike down the cable.

not planning on using the CAT5 for voice calls, i have a digital cordless phone(that works)for that. just for data only.
Do you know of good place to buy DB CAT5? Would be interesting to price up compared to CAT5 and conduit (the ends will terminate inside the house and cabin).

The external grade that CMS do should suffice.

www.cableman.co.uk (you can also order centrally and collect locally, depending on where you are)

AS5E-305C5EXT 305m Box £62.55

Alternatively

25m of conduit about £20-£30
Box of normal CAT5e £28

So much of a muchness.

(In other news, if your mate is going ahead with wireless multiroom audio I'm now doing Squeezboxes and active speakers etc)

I have just done this myself!

Buried a conduit that I put two cat5e cables in. The cables from TLC were rated down to -15c so I think iam ok.

fixed a bunch of headaches with getting data to my garage.

Seems like it would be a better idea to use some conduit and put normal Cat5e/6, if at anytime i needed more cables (can't think why at the moment) i can pop some more in there.

...He has thought about it and in the long term he will want video to most of the rooms so he is going to hold back for a while and put some more £££ away; i think that he will be getting the cables put in, but at a later date.
He didn't say what he's going to do with his missus though.
Although i may interested in the squeeebox and active speakers, as i would like music in the hot tub outside. Do you have a site that i can take a looksies at?

Do have a corporate site but dont maintain a products section as such as we try to remain technology agnostic, fitting the solution to the problem if you will.

Squeezebox here: www.slimdevices.com
Active Speakers here: www.audioengineusa.com

Also there is a NAS box which runs the SlimServer software obviating the need for a PC to be on all the time to serve the music. Available in sizes from 200Gb to 3Tb or with no HDD allowing you to fit your own here: www.qnap.com.tw

The speakers are a bit steep!
i know maplin offer a pair (of a lesser quality) for only £30. Quality of sound isn't really an issue as they are going to be used outside under a kazebo.

Indeed, great sound though and just a line I carry, they look reasonable compared to the £135K's worth of JBL Synthesis at the other end of the market mind you...

Beauty of the Squeezebox though is that the local amplification is up to you, so you could use a stereo amp and speakers or something like a PC woofer and satellites really is your choice.

What i am going to try and do first to plug the active speakers station into a small CD unit i have in the conservitory and try the wireless from there (the hot tub is next to it). If that works then problem solved as i can remote control the CD unit though the window. If how ever i goes all crappy then i think that i might go and get a squeeze box. I've always like the idea of them, but it means that i need to tidy up my MP3 collection
