AVG just found 2 viruses on my Dell. Message read: Potentially harmful Programme dialler.BOC.

Programmes were: C:\Windows\nctl.exe

and

C:\Windows\nctl.exe:\free_sex_download_UK.exe.

AVG said one was embedded and could not be cured. I did a Google and they looked naughty so I searched for them on Dell and found one icon named "nctl" which looked like a cardboard box with the lid open.

I deleted it and ran another virus scan and this time it has come up clear. Also the file below which I undertand "nctl.exe" installs on the PC cannot be found so hopefully I have got rid of it.

C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-57989841-1715567821-725345543-1004\LOGS,

Am I right in thinking that if this is a dialler, it can only dial using the PC's internal modem and, as this is disconnected from the phone line and I am using the external USB port for the broadband modem, then the dialler cannot connect to the phone line?

Wonder how it got past my Zone Alarm Pro Firewall and AVG too.

Cheers

Yep, diallers work on the principal of connecting you to an expensive metered call.

If its not connected, no worries.
