My current PC has decided to die (yes i'm using another to post this). I suspect it's one of my HDDs that's died actually.

Anyway the rest of the spec isn't really up to date and won't play BF2 or GTL very well at all. So i'm going to invest in a new setup.

Currently have:

Antec Sonata case
Seasonic 380W PSU
Abit NFS-7 2.0 Mobo
AMD Athlon XP-M 1800 with aero7+ cooler
Club3d Nvidia 6600GT AGP
1gb of Geil Golden Dragon RAM (1x512, 2x256 pc3200)
various optical drives and 3 hard drives - 2 ATA 133 and 1 SATA. not sure which has died on me so i'll probably ditch the lot and get some new ones (raptors maybe if i can afford them!)

I'll probably only bother keeping the case and my cdrw + dvdrom drive.

Firstly, is anyone interested in buying any of the above?

Secondly, i'm a bit out of touch with the latest hardware. What am I looking at for a decent setup to run the above games? I don't need anything smack bang up to date but obviously needs to be a decent system with a good gfx card able to run those games at decent resolutions with fsaa on.

I already have case, mouse, keyboard, monitor and speakers. Just need mobo, cpu (plus a QUIET cooler, my aero7 is ridiculously loud), psu, gfx, ram, 300gb ish of hdd space. Hoping to spend 3-400 quid, is this realistic or should i save a few more pennies/hit the overdraft? oh and i'm fine with building it myself too, i'll just need the components.

The issue here is whether you want to bite the bullet and upgrade to pci-e, or limit yourself with agp. The reason you're struggling in gtl/bf2 is your processor. I have a similar system (9800pro, 2gig Corsair), but I have a 3200+, and they both ran absolutly fine in 1280. You may have quite a few issues getting hold of a socket A now though. A good option may be the cheap dual core intel overclock, currently doing the rounds. Someone else may know more about this though.

Out of interest, what are the symptoms of your dead pc?

Quite happy to upgrade to pci-e now as i don't see the point buying agp anymore and as you say it's harder to get hold of older stuff.

First of all the PC started locking up randomly. Meaning i had to hard reboot it quite a lot. This could be during games or just while on the desktop doing nothing. Then it started running scandisk every time i booted up. Now it won't boot up at all. Gets to the windows xp bit with the green bars running underneath, then the screen goes blank and it won't load. I've tried safe mode and it freezes again. Could reformat and try that but i think it's just one of the hard drives that's dead. I see it as an excuse to upgrade.

Try running knoppix or something and see if you can diagnose from there. All though it sounds like mine did when the power supply was on its way out...

I thought it was the PSU aswell so I got a new one (Seasonic 380w to replace my old antec truepower 380w) and it still does it.

I'm not really interested in fixing it as such because it won't run BF2 anyway!

Maddog chose me a great set of new PC componants, most of which have recieved the full 5 stars in PC Pro!

I have an Asus M2N32-SLI Delux mobo, Geforce GF795 GX2 graphics card, 2x1GB of fast DDR2 Corsair RAM, AMD Athlon 64X2 4600, Seasonic 650W PSU etc, and I can confirm, this set up eats ANY game at any resolution on the highest settings!
