There seems to be an awful lot of sites inviting payment for file sharing, ie: napster, edonkey etc

Whats the crack then? you pay a yearly subscription of $19.95 and the all your downloads are legal? Or are you just paying so you don't have to install spyware and advertisements onto your pc?

Basically, If I paid this fee and then downloaded music, whacked it on a cd and played it, would that constitute a copywright infringement?

If i'm perfectly honest I would rather take them for free than pay for something that doesn't exist, or is i-tunes and the like just plain better?

Er, depends on what you want.

Random illegal or questionable / immoral sites including the like of AllOfMP3 etc...typically not a huge choice, and not the kinds of people you want to give your credit card details to (IMHO).

iTunes...pay per track, yours to keep and do what you want with within the bounds of the copyright restrictions.

Napster...three options:
1. You rent the music, unlimited downloads at £9.95 / month, you can download on up to 3 PC's, and iirc you can listen / stream on any PC.
2. You rent the music, and for and additional fiver you can sync to 2 MP3 players (that support Windows DRM)
3. You can also pay per track as per iTunes.

The summary is that with iTunes if Apple disappeared tomorrow, you would still have the music.

With Napster if they go under (not *that* unlikely) or (and as has happened) a record company withdraws their licence from Napster, you can no longer listen to your "rented" music.

I went for Napster because it allows me to download lots of music quickly and easily and then look for / keep songs I like for a fixed monthly free and of course there are undetectable ways of getting around Windows DRM.

You get to pay $19.95 and then allowed to download a free client like utorrent or azureus which can be freely used to download files in the public domain like game demos/updates, film trailers, applications from publisher sites

If you downloaded the mp3's with the "service" there is a very high chance of a copyright infringment

itunes is apple ipod only and u cant legally transfer them to another mp3 player due to DRM. Not going to discuss the other options here.

plenty of sites that allow downloads, finding the legal ones is the problem

Personally would not touch this service, but maybe tell us the title of the service without posting the link, then the guys who know can check out the site and tell u
