And, before you say it, these can load XP as well as Apple's (hugely superior) operating system.

Give us some idea of the spec you want (or what you'll be using it for).

I recently bought an IBM (OK, Lenovo) ThinkPad T43 (14" XGA screen, 2GHz Centrino, 1GB RAM, 80GB HDD) and I'm as pleased with it as you can be about a laptop.
They look a bit dear, but the price includes 3yrs w'tee.

I will be operating our booking and despatch system on it, and emails etc, nothing fancy but I need reliability and security over speed or gizmos, as I seem to be out of the office more and more.

I recently bought a Tosh Tecra A4 which I am well happy with, 2GHz, 1GB Ram 80GB HD and 15.4 screen. Am totally happy with it, feels quick and happily carry it on my push bike.

I paid £870 including mouse/keyboard, but this was through the higher education agreement jobby, so not sure on the real world cost. Probably not that different.

Mac all the way. If you're not fussed about ultimate speed but need robustness and reliability, then get a MacBook (the plastic one) and load it up with RAM. The MacBook Pros are nice but a bit precious and fragile, if you're carting it around every day (like I do) then the more robust MacBook is worth it.

I'm currently doing an experiment seeing whether I can get 4 GB of RAM in my MacBook.
