Why did they have to have a falling out with the people that do all that flash stuff? Now I have to click everything twice to get where I want to be.

I had that security thing downloaded which got rid of it, but now its back. I tried to download it again but windows wouldn't let me, anybody know how I can get round it?

Its the thing whereby you now have to click on things that are flash embedded in Internet explorer, even windows media player and the like.

You don't have to click anything to view flash... ActiveX maybe?

Not really Microsoft's fault to be honest. It's the wa**kers who insisted on how Microsoft dealt with it that need shooting. It's certainly irritating!

I believe the problem may be behind the keyboard.

Microsoft is being sued over their WGA Tool, it supposedly violates spyware laws.

The problem is not behind the keyboard, the problem is that Eolas are claiming to have invented the idea of a browser that could support plugins, and have a patent to that effect.

Eolas have then lawyered up and gone after the biggest money pot - eg MS

MS have patched IE to try to work around this, and thus avoid having to give squillions of dollars to Eolas.

Expect firefox, opera et al. to be targeted and have to follow suit.

The entire patent is dubious at best, but it's been upheld more than once. For once I'm well and truly on the side of MS, Eolas are a bunch of money grabbing f**kwits.

doboo is correct on the cause for this.

We (Cantarus) released a fix for this a couple of months ago to all the clients we had done websites, Intranets, etc. for. As far as I know fixing the website is the only way to fix the problem, although this may have changed since we rolled out our fixes...

Roadsweeper is also correct on what I would term a "proper" fix. Don't expect MS or anyone else to sort it out, fix it yourself at the server side and avoid problems that way.

Basically, anything with OBJECT or EMBED code will fall foul of this and require "activation".

I believe you can use javascript to squirt in your embedded object and avoid the problem, but I don't have any specific details on how...

Yeah, all the fixes I found were for actual webpages, not for me.

There was a security update that rolled back IE to before the thing happened, but now everything has updated and that exe file doesn't work.

There is talk of a plugin that detects OBJECT APPLET and EMBED tags, and converts them to javascript on the fly, thus avoiding the need for the "click to activate".

That solution is far to elegant for Microsoft (it's what they should have done in the first place), but I'd bet that's what happens for Firefox.

In the meantime, why not bin out IE altogether and join the 21st century...
