Basically my parents PC seems to of shat itself. It really is quite old though, an AMD K6 350mhz running Windows ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now they want a new PC but dont want to spend too much, say £450-500 - is Dell gonna be the way forward? I think they may be unsure of buying from anyone else after the vendor they bought their first PC off went tits up about a month after (Escom is think) - meaning no support...etc

Does anyone have any offer codes for Dell or alternative decent reputable suppliers?

cheers

we use Dell stuff at work all the time and it's good, solid and reliable kit. Perfect for use where performance isn't the most important part...

What do they use the computer for? You can get a basic system with 15" flat panel for under £400.

My daughter bought a Dell system just before Christmas. I've never come across a system so easy to set up. Basically plug it in and go. The initial boot asked a few simple questions and that was it.

If you order it online, they'l load up all the warranty options as you go through the process and bump the price way over the headline price. Just choose standard back to base.

Also, they've been pre-loading AOL and a few other bits recently - worth spending a few minutes in add/remove programs clearing it out. The Symantec you get hassles you untill you sign up, then only works for a couple of months and then wants £££, don't feel locked into it if you want to use something else.

Buy a tabloid... always seem to be offers in there.

Check out the factory outlet as well - can save you a few quid, or get a better spec machine for your money (most don't have monitors though)

Second the Dell Outlet, keep an eye on it over a few days and you will often pick up a bargain. I have just ordered a cheapy desktop from there running Window Media Centre as want to use it in for recording TV and act as a basic file store to compliment my laptop, even after adding on a 17" LCD it has come in at £404 inc Vat & Delivery, running this through my business so get the Vat back as well.... so cheap. A system running XP Home will be even lower than this and if your folks have a screen they can carry over then they could be looking at a perfectly usable system for a little over £200.

As mentioned check all the options in the options list, a few will deduct down the price, in mine there was a "buy now and save option" currently an offer mentioned on the outlet front page, however you have to tick it to get your £55 off. Delivery then goes back on but the offer and delivery cancel each other out so the price you see in the listings is pretty much the price you will end up paying.

Yep, I would probably recommend Dell, but do take a quick look at Mesh, worth at least considering.

Agreed - just spent 600 quid for my folks, 19 inch screen, 250 gig hard drive, gig of ram and a dual core P4 plus a few other extras like an internal card reader and modem.

Cheers guys, will check out the suggestions.

Kinky - yhm.

oh and with regards what they use it for - mostly email/internet/microsoft office stuff but they will want to keep it for 3-5yrs so something that'll handle most future stuff...

We used to use Dell at work, but they were so unreliable we've switched suppliers. We're not talking all from the same batch either, but 12 machines in groups of 3 over a year period. All 12 have now failed in one way or another.

I'd suggest a Mac Mini Seriously.

If they were happy with the old clunker theres always the cheap option - picked up a Compaq Deskpro p3 800Mhz 256MB ram on ebay for £90 including 17" CRT , new mouse and keyboard, shipping and a genuine windows licence. Banged in another 256MB for £10 , added an AGP graphics card for another £20 and bingo one internet ready PC ! It will even play games - ok not the big new ones but sonic heroes for the kids runs fine :-)

Has USB ports so its on the wireless internet now, the guy who's selling them even refurbed it so no dust and everything working including a new modem (which I threw away old tech yuk)

I don't know if this still holds, but a while ago you could use Dell coupons. If they were stackable, you could combine them for the same purchase, ie. two 10% off coupons would save you 20% off your purchase price. You could buy these coupons off eBay for very reasonable prices too, ie. a fiver.

So...look into this. It might save you a good 100 quid on a 300 pound purchase.

Have a look here http://beta.hotukdeals.com/deal/1462/ and here http://beta.hotukdeals.com/deal/1463/

(3-day deals, so if you are reading this on Tuesday it's probably too late)

It's a good web site to keep bookmarked if you are looking for new electrical goods etc.

I've just got myself a new desktop.

I ended up getting a reconditioned machine from the PC world clearance website. Might be worth a look?
