Is anyone here doing anything cool or interesting with IP Multicast?

Would you be willling to have a chat about it?

I'm loking into some stuff delivering over satellite, I'm particularly interested in developing some test tools, but need to look at some Apps that are using it already.

Specifically, does anyone know of a test multicast server I might be able to use in order to develop some test code?

Suspect you might not get too much of a reponse on this one!

The most interesting thing we did with it was multicast the World Cup games across our network. 7mb/sec and brilliant quality, even on a plasma!

We run Cisco IPTV on multicast, but cool or interesting? Not really.

On a private network? Done lots of that. BTW it's one of the quickest ways to crash a router. Most routers have multicast bugs in them.

That sounds like fun, and pretty funky, mind me asking what client and server software did you used?

Do you have any test tools?

I'm really after something that is command line based... I have a scriptable test engine that can handle doing telnet stuff to Linux boxes etc, what I really need is a program that will act as a sink to multicast traffic without popping up a window or anything else that needs a human to drive it.

Better still would be a test tool that would sink multicast traffic with a bit of knowledge about the upper protocol layers and what it was trying to receive. Ideally it might spit out some stats on how well it thought the network was performing.

thanks

It was pretty good - freeview from every desktop

I'm not sure about the stuff used - I just did the multicast config on the switches and routers.

We used VLC Media player to watch it (a freebie), which is downloadable from the net.

I can find out if you're interested though. Think the encoder/receiver was about 800 quid all in.

Gawd knows. The network geeks might have, but I wouldn't bet on it!

Haven't done anything recently, we used develop large scale distributed virtual environments linked using multicast, made life well easy, and we looked into multicast address allocation services.

All this was done inside coorperate networks and was around 7 or 8 years ago. Understand that multicast still is enabled on most routers, were I am not it doesn't exist, and I don't think it is supported in the internet at large.
