How do I get the kids off msn?
Discussion
My children are changing before my very eyes.
I used to have a nice Son and Daughter, polite, repectable, always did their homework (well, I had to kick the Son into doing it, but he would eventually).
My son has discovered Runescape and it's eating his brain. My daughter has discovered msn chatting and has turned into a loud, short tempered, disrespectful, angry young girl.
My son is ok - I can use the router's settings to not allow runescape to run, other than when I say it can once he's finished his homework, chores etc. by using the block domain. He's slowly becoming more human and might just make it!
My daughter uses msn and I don't know how to disable this through the router. I can add it to the block sites, but it's a program, not a website, so it still works. I want to be able to kill it without having to go in her room and without her knowing how it's stopped working. RealVNC is quite handy to keep an eye on them, but they can see if I start interfering and I get the full waterworks. It's better if they think it's just broken if you know what I mean. Unfortunately, the router is in her room aswell, so I can't just unplug the cable.
There must be a way - help!
BTW, I use a Netgear DG834g
How can I stop MSN Messenger from getting access to the internet via the router?

Don't get me wrong, I think msn can be quite good for her and it saves me a fortune in telephone bills, but I'd rather she was using the internet for her homework and not chatting all night. Once the homework is done, then she can chat till her hearts content

OK, I see your point with runescape. All those onine games (MMORPG?) kinda scared me. All a bit to strange if you know what I meen. With MSN, probably she's ony talking to her friends, just as she would at school. Are you sure she's just using MSN to talk to friends and not found the ore open aspects of it. The changes you describe in her may just be oe of those age things, give it a couple of weeks and it hopefully should grow away. (Please to take this the wrong way, just my own thoughts)
edited as i only noticed your second post: block http ports on the router - easiest wasy to go, but may now block msn web messenger and other workarounds.

Scroll down past the adverts - don't press the solution button. MSN is sneaky so it will tunnel through http port you have open to allow web browsing in general, so one of the best ways to block it is to url filter out the login/.net passport servers. Or you can ip block the login servers. This tends to kill hotmail though if you use it.
If you look on the page listed befoer I think there is a list of server to kill off. Unfortunately there are lots of them.
ETA I see there is a few of us still up tonight. 5 replies while I was typing

Copy and past the above into your c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts in addition to blocking the ports mentioned.
There are a few other ways to do it such as unregistering the dll and flattening the exe but by blocking the ports and stopping signon it will appear like msn is down.

is this XP Pro or XP Home? Is she using windows messenger or MSN messenger?
XP Pro with Windows Messenger -> start, run, "gpedit.msc". Open up administrative templates (in both Computer Configuration and User Configuration), windows components, Windows messnger and enable both options in there.

download the Trend Micro firmware for the DG834G and give it a try - it includes parental control software in the router
http://kbserver.netgear.com/release_n
then, from the router you can control pretty much everything each individual PC/User on the home network can access/do from a central location...all very easily (without manual config of firewall rules etc)
theres a free trial in there so if you dont like it then you dont have to pay for anything....to be honest, its a pretty cheap way of covering the home network for anti virus/spam/parental controls etc if you have multiple PCs in the home

The following worked for me:
MSN Messenger can be blocked by blocking IP access to the Hotmail network range-64.4.0.0 through 64.4.63.255. Interestingly, this does not seem to totally block access to Hotmail's Web-based mail service.
If you're comfortable modifying the registry of the PC and want a permanent solution, EE recommend
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINEsoftwarepoliciesmicrosoft
create a new key called Messenger. Create another key under Messenger called Client. Then create a DWORD under client, call it PreventRun and give it a value of 1. this key can be exported to a file and imported into the registry of other computers.

LOLOL, We're going through exactly the same, my step daughter has just turned 12, was always softly spoken and always spoke with a clarity that is sadly missing from a lot of young kids today - however, through a combo of Bebo and MSM, she's transforming into Vicki Pollar and acting exactly as you describe! The stepson, like your's is not so bad! I think I even have the same router! Will try some of those links tonight!

This isn't a personal attack, Scraggles, but I'm about to take issue with that statement.
PARENTS!
Do NOT abdicate your responsibilities just because its a damn computer! 1) LEARN! YES YOU CAN!
2) If you can't go down the technology route - KEEP THE DOOR OPEN! Only have a computer in "the study", or in the lounge - use good old fashioned parenting to kick 'em off MSN if you think they shouldn't be doing it for so long!
3) DON'T let them have the damn computer in their bedroom! You wouldn't let them have a phone in there would you? Or a TV?
SUPERVISION is worth a LOT of technology...
Jeez.
