I`v got an Orange SPV M500 phone and i bought a 256 multi media card 7 months ago, someone on e bay as some 4GB mm cards for sale at £56 he advises that you check first whether they fit, so i contacted Orange and they said the card i need is a sd card.

I could not get her to say that mm cards and sd cards are the same, i am using a mm card so i know it works but why did she say i need a sd card?.

Are there the same?

I suppose i`ll have to ring them again, am i missing something?

No, they're not the same.

Best place is www.expansys.com , they're very good indeedy. Some of the cards will be labelled as specifically compatible with certain mobile phones.

SD cards are slightly larger (I think?) and have a write protect switch. MM cards will work in SD slots.

BTW the best way to find out what card it needs is to read the manual, or just google your phone for reviews.

Get whatever you need from here and save some money - www.valueflash.co.uk site's not great but cheap and delivery is pretty good.

Stupid thing is, the bit we put on the processor chip in the phone is identical (it's an mmc/sd reader ), but the mechanicals are different. Which one the phone maker uses is down to them.

I am aware that this post is not really much help

An MMC card will work in an SD enabled device but not necessarily vice versa. MMC is a subset of SD without the pins for the S bit of SD. Depends if you want to store protected content or not I think.

Correct SD cards are bigger but the M5000 will take MM and SD where as say a nokia 6230 will only take MM.

*cough* Comes down to whether the manufacturer wants to buy the SD license or not

you must be mistaken to find a 4GB mmc card for £56.I dont think that they are available in that size.
Sounds more like a 1 or 2gb

www.mobymemory.com/

Both relatively cheap and tells you what phones are compatible.

Yes it is a 4gb! but be careful because that user is USA registered which is a bit of a gamble.
I can recommend mobymemory as I have used them several times also the 7day shop are competitive but not so fast at delivering. Mobymemory will have a card to your door within a day or two.
