Just been out to see a customer. Usual story, can't get on the net etc.

Ring up Tiscali and end up speaking to Mumbai Through a thick accent I can just about work out that the ADSL line has been switched off in error

The story goes BT or Tiscali (I didn't posess the will to lengthen the conversation any more than necessary) were performing maintenance and the line was switched off. So... After speaking to Tiscali technical, Tiscali sales, BT Broadband help, BT PSTN faults and BT Wholesale it turns out that any line that is switched off is automatically culled by a BT bot

So, why didn't they warn the customer? Who actually instigated the maintenance order in the first place? Why wasn't there a provision in place to reactivate the line

I went round in circles and almost got someone at BT Wholesale to enable the line but without an order from Tiscali they couldn't help

So, five days with no service while the wheels of faceless businesses churn.

Are Tiscali and BT bullshitting me? Sounds to me like Tiscali dropped a blooper and requested BT cease the circuit. I suspect I'll never know the truth but I nearly succeeded.

Pretty much the exact reason I left Tiscali (and that in itself is pretty hard as you are left without broadband for about 3 weeks due to them not signing up to MAC codes).

Line goes down (already confirmed by BT but was told I should speak to my ISP for further info on how long etc). Tiscali muppet tells me line is perfectly ok must be my equipment Rubbish says I, but jump through his hoops checking a few settings etc. End of these test he tells me I need to return my computer to the shop as it is faulty (I kid you not, these were his exact words). Put phone down and put provisions in place to leave Tiscali.

Line comes back up 24hours later, all normal. 3 days later I receive an email from Tiscali warning me of a potential outage to my service on xxx date. Yep, very nice of them to advise me of a potential outage 5 days after the date they mention themselvs in the bloody email, and if they knew about it why the hell did the muppet on the phone not know about it.

Hate dealing with the big providers for that reason, you can never ever speak to someone who

a) knows what the bloody hell they're talking about
b) can do anything

Whereas the other day I had to speak to a local ISP on 3 or 4 occasions, every time I was speaking to someone who knew their stuff within about 20 seconds. You can't put a price on that really! it was netcentral.co.uk

Its like when a company gets to a certain size you're suddenly not allowed to speak to them anymore!

Sounds like it's BT level of incompetence. We had our ISDN line cut and one of the pairs used for someone's new phoneline a few months back. No phones for nearly 2 weeks. Then they did the same a week later... and we're a BT gold partner, not that it seems to matter.

Apparently you get that a lot in the US. BRI isn't very widely supported or popular over there, but some exchanges do provide it. Those exchanges are usually over subscribed for the service, so it isn't uncommon for a customer to lose a line for a couple of days, then another customer to lose a line for another couple of days, as they ration the service out!

Get three fair usage warnings from Tiscali they will give you a MAC address to move to a different provider!!!
