NTL cable modem problem

Now I will contact NTL support, but I thought I'd consult the PH sages first:

My cable connection drops about once a day. The sync light stays on but the RDY light slowling blinks.

I can (usually) restore the connection by unscrewing the cable and wiggling it a bit until the RDY light blinks fast. Once that occurs the connection is fine.

This sound like a dodgy connection in the modem? The modem is 3 years old so could well be on the way out.

Could be a dodgy cable itself, i had NTL come out once for a problem with my STB and he changed the connector on the end of the cable as apparently the old style connector has a higher signal loss. When they fitted my cable modem they already fitted a new style connector to it.
