I have a strange problem which I can't resolve! Basically my new-ish Vaio (VGN SZ) will connect to my router (netgear) by wireless but when I stick a cable in the side of it won't work!! Both wired and wireless used to work but only wireless does now!

Ideas anyone?

I've done a few tests like swap cables and I have tested another laptop with my router which works fine so it would defo seem to be the laptop and not the cable or router!

once plugged in, try running ipconfig /all from a command prompt

also, make sure the wired adapter is enabled (sorry to state the obvious)
sometime (mine does it) when running on battery the laptop may disable the wired connection to save power.

What happens if you disable the wireless connection? Does the wired connection then work?

Open up a command prompt in windows (start > run > cmd > Click Ok.
Type: ipconfig and press enter.

As you have two adapters you should see something like this:

ipconfig output said:

Windows IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected

Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : shadowveil.foo
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.136
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1

If you don't see two devices listed then for some reason the wired NIC is not active. This can be on modern laptops for a few different reasons.
1. Drivers for it are up the spout.
2. Windows has disabled it for some reason.
For both of these go in to "control panel > System > Hardware tab > Device Manager" and make sure the device is listed and not marked with a ! in a triangle. If it is try turning the device on (right click and select 'Activate') if it is not listed reinstall drivers.

3. A few drivers will disable the wired controller if nothing is plugged in AND your running on battery power, if something is listed in Control Panel similat ro "Internal NIC configuration" go in to is and set it to not disable when on battery power.

Any of that help?

I had the same problem on a dell. Turned out that you needed the power pluged in for the network card to work ( battery saving mesure ), foxed me for an hour.
