I've been having some troubles with my PC since I moved house - it's been switching itself off intermittantly. I believe the problem is due to the current heat rather than it suffering during the move.

Can anyone recommend a free bit of software that I can use to monitor my cpu temps to see whether this is likely to be the cause - I can get a reading in the bios but that's not much use if I want to use the pc! Or is the problem likely to be related to something else altogether?

or use speedfan - www.download.com then search for speedfan

It will tell you all m/board temps plus hard disk temps and if the graphics card supports it that too ! Plus it can read the SMART status from the hard disks

Well, I think i've determined it's heat related... odd as I have had no issues with it in the 4.5 years I have owned it. I have vac'd both the case and the psu out which made no difference.

Installed my 18" fan about 6" from the open case and it seems to be keeping temps in check with no crashes/software glitches (firefox & outlook would frequently crash previously). Motherboard monitor is currently showing a cpu temp of 50deg down from about 60 earlier on in the evening.

I'll try speedfan and see if it gives any more info, but the current solution seems to be sacrificing my big fan for computer cooling duties rather than user cooling

I've tried a fair number of these tools and each one reports that my CPU is running at around 98 degrees centigrade. Which i'm pretty sure it's not

The on-board temp sensors that these apps need to interrogate in order to work are notoriously crap. Use the temperatures they report as a guide rather than gospel.

Not really using the numbers as gospel - more a relative measure to compare different conditions I haven't got a clue what a "safe" cpu temp is anyway!
