Connection Problems

My hard drive failed earlier in the week and I've installed a new one and added XP. I've got the internet semi-working but am having trouble connecting to certain sites. For example I can look at ebay and do a search but if I attempt to sign in I get the page cannot be displayed screen. The same when I try to access internet banking. Also I am unable to activate the XP install. XP is unable to establish a connection to the activation server I'm sure these problems are related Please someone put me out of my misery and tell me which setting or default is wrong Or suggest anything that might be the culprit!

Strange question but who is your ISP? And have you tried rebooting your modem/router/set top box?
