Simple question really... I have a Linksys wireless router with a Lacie shared drive attached. Mrs Puggit's laptop will not allow her to resolve it's name (security reasons), so she needs to connect via IP address.

I've managed to extend the DHCP lease to 6 days, 23 hours - but can't see where/how to setup permanent IP addresses.

Is it possible?

Are you talking about the internal or external network address?

I have a split range of IP addresses on my 3Com Wireless DSL box. I have 192.168.0.1 for the LAN side of the router then 0.2 through 0.99 as DHCP assigned then 0.100 through 0.255 as statics.

The way to do it is to set your DHCP range to 02. through 0.99 or similar then simply set the IP of any devices you want to be fixed outside of this range.

From the other angle, you will need to log into the setup firmware of your LaCie unit and manually set it's IP address to, for example 192.168.0.99 (or whatever the range is on your router) rather than have it automatically aquire via DHCP.

So you want a static IP on the Lacie box?

If it's always switched on, theoretically it'll just keep acquiring the same IP address but if that's the scenario we'll have a look

It's in a bedroom, so gets switched off at night... If I'm not working at home it may not get switched on during the day.

I'll have a look in the Lacie manuals...

Just pick one outside your DHCP range and it should be fine.

Bingo - I needed to set up the IP address on the Lacie, not on the router!

Thanks all!
