Hi folks,
is it possible when using two computers networked together to have each one use a diferent address for receiving e mails.
I would like to down load my mail on one and the wife's on the other one, is this possible?
I changed the default address on the wife's PC to her adress and password, but now outlook express is trying to down load 37,000 messaages from the beginning of time!
Any help appreciated, thanks.
G.

Hmmm. You seem to have a fairly fundamental misunderstanding of the way email works. An email address is like a phone number - you can have any number of phones on your desk with different numbers and you can have two phones on two desks which share the same number, if you see what I mean.

If you have two different POP3 addresses (eg. me@myprovider.com and wife@myprovider.com) then it should be fairly trivial to set each up on different machines.

If OE is trying to download 1000's of emails then you have not set it up to delete messages off the server when they've been read or else it is an address that hasn't been read for a while and has been spammed to hell and back.

thanks for that Jon, so it is possible.
How do I set up the addresses, as I only managed to change one when it put a dialogue box up asking for the password.
And how do I delete the messages off the server?
Sorry for being a numpty.

Ok. Creating a new e-mail address requires a first step. Much the same way a cell phone needs to be activated your ISP's mail server needs to be told that 'wife@provider.com' exists. Otherwise their server will forever tell people "Unknown User, go away".

How you do this depends on your ISP, however most have a web control panel type thingie you can go in to and make alterations to stuff. You'll probably need to go to www.isp.com (i.e. www.ntlworld.com, www.nildram.com, or who ever) and hunt around for "My Account" or similar. It'll prompt you for username/password (in a lot of cases this is the primary e-mail address for the account and the password that goes with it so me@provider.com / my password). Should be an option in their marked e-mail addresses or POP3 mail.

If you get lost dig through the paperwork and find the phone number for tech support. Explain your having trouble making a new e-mail address and they'll either walk you through it or do it for you... probably be the easiest call the guy has all night

With that step done. Now you can configure your mail client
Sorry if this makes it seem overly complex, being sat doing it takes all of 30 seconds usually I'm just trying to cover all the options.

Good advice there.

Yes, the first step is indeed to make sure that you have two entirely separate email addresses. You can't share the same email address between two computers in the way you are suggesting as emails would permanently be moved to whichever machine downloaded them and could not be seen on the other (this is where my phone analogy breaks down).

Once you have two separate addresses, it is just a simple case of setting the second address up on your wife's computer in the same way as you set up yours on yours. The Outlook Express Wizard makes it very easy.

thanks guys, after talking to the "guru" for one and a half hours, it looks like I have a problem with OE and it will have to be re-installed.
Is it possible to save the e mail contacts and the saved e-mails?
Thanks.
