Get rid of McAffee........

Anyone got any tips as to how to completely remove this horrible programme from my computer?
I have uninstalled from the ad/remove programmes but there are some files left which can't (apparently) be removed. McAffee Security Centre won't uninstall at all as it claims there is a fault while trying to do so.
McAffee also keeps putting itself back into my startup menu even though I keep deselecting it!
I'm running XP Home, and now using AVG which seems to do a good job without taking over my machine.
Any advice greatfully received.
