I need to give CentOS a go but noticed that the latest version (4) uses udev rather than dev... From reading about it it looks like it can be set up to look very similar but it doesnt have to be. Has anyone come accross this yet and is it likley to present any compatability problems with pre-packaged RPM's? (i.e. the support pack for a proliant DL380 server?)

Now someone will appear and say I'm talking utter rubbish here but.... in for a penny.

udev should present no problems with pre-packaged rpm's that are compatible with the version of CentOS you are using. My experience suggests to me that populating the udev system is handled by the hotplug system during boot-up so any hardware that's added and the kernel has drivers for is present and correct by the time the bash prompt appears.

I belive in the case of migration their is a 'populate udev' script of some sorts (not got an old Gentoo handbook around sorry) but the migration guide for CentOS should cover dev -> udev. I belive the only real change you'll see is a new process appearing called udevd which handles keeping everything as it should be.

I've had no bad experiences using udev on 2.6.x kernels running Gentoo Linux, so mileage may vary on a rpm based distro.
