Can I use SATA 2 with a SATA 1 connection? I have a PCI to SATA 1 convertor and I'd like to stick a large hard drive in my music server, and the prices on SATA are v good at the moment

The 3Gb/s standard (usually referred to, incorrectly, as SATA II) is backwards compatible with the 1.5Gb/s SATA I standard. Therefore you can use a SATA II HDD with a SATA I interface, though you are of course limited to the slower 1.5Gb/s speed.

See here for more information.

Hope this helps,

roadie.

Note: some motherboards may require that SATA2 drives will need a jumper putting on them (not a pullover) to make them be seen as a SATA drive.
