56 and 60 a generally too close to the 50hz flicker of flourescent (sp?) lights so some peope will see it flicker and can get headaches. 70 72 85 and above are generally far enough away for most people.

Its really what feels comfortable.

I can spot 56 and 60 a mile away but I have pointed it out to people and they say they haven't noticed it.

What ^^^^ said, I always try and get 85 or above. I can always tell 60 and it really annoys me after a while.

Highest possible is best.

Most people will stop seeing a difference around 80 though.

If you are staring at it all day then highest is definately best. I can't see a difference over 85 but when I am staring at a monitor all day my eyes feel better at 120 than 100, even though I can't "see" the difference.

I try to run at least 100 where possible. 60 is horrible to work with.

Ancient Dell 19" CRT.

Actually, you've made me doubt myself and double-check. Yup! 85 it is...

Mine does 120hz at lower resolution

80+ hz is good for the eyes, like everyone else says.

Most office environments use HF fluorescent fittings whch run at >30kHz so you won't get interferance from them.

Running a CRT display at 60Hz (at higher resolution on the PC I have) makes me feel ill which is why the company I work for has kindly swapped my CRT for a TFT on health and safety grounds.

You can run some at 75Hz but I don't think it has any discernable affect.

Not the ones I visit. If they have thought about energy consumtion yes but the standard ones are still cheaper to fit. I'm told the ROI is 3yrs

I can spot a flicker at 65hz after using a monitor at a higher rate. My monitor runs at the highest rate possible for the screen res I'm using, in this case 75hz.
