Now excuse my computer numptyness, even after spending nearly all my working life sat in front of a big beige box I've still not the foggyest how the things work
Basically the internet crashes on a regular basis, and it's recently stopped me clicking just about any links, if this thread had a link to another website if I clicked it it'd either just sit there looking back at me doing nothing or fire up the Mircosoft error thing screen with 'send/don't send' on it.
When I'm not connected to the internet it all works fine.
Advice in the office suggests basically taking the back off and killing the power to the harddrive, not really that keen on that option as it seems to involve loseing a shed load of info thats on the PC, or I s'pose I could actually back it up and delete 95% of the crap on it

Is there an easy fix? To me it looks like some setting of some discription has changed, but what, and how do I get it back to normal?

Sounds like you work with a right bunch of muppets. Don't be taking any of their advice...

Oh and I'm always getting some warning of some sort about virtual memory being low, what's that all about.

remember the 1st line in the 1st post, I'm clueless about how these things work, so please don't talk 'geek' to me, I need simple straightforward fixes please.

Need some more information.

- What version of Windows?
- Do you get any error messages when "the interet crashes"?

If it's just a random crash it tends to be proceded by the virtual memory low warning, if it's due to clicking a link I get the microsoft error pop-up thing with the send/don't send buttons on the bottom.

Sorry I can't be a little more discriptive as I'm not on the home pc at the moment so can't see the errors.

How much RAM is in the PC?
What size hard disk do you have (and how full is it)?
What is the virtual memory currently set to? (see: My Computer (right click)/ Properties / Advanced / Performance / Settings / Advanced / Virtual Memory)

Chances are, the warnings you are seeing (send to MS etc) is Internet Explorer crashing.

First thing to do is to ensure you've got the latest version and service pack on your PC (try and run Windows Updates?)

Always a decent idea to throw memory at PC's though - a cheap way of improving performance.

No idea, it's silver
can you tell I'm out my depth in here
I'll have a look tonight, it's a couple of years old but wasn't a poverty spec machine so should be ok for memory size, and I don't think I've managed to download enough filth to fill the thing just yet

What should the virtual memory be set to?

Best suggestion would be to post to this thread whilst sat at your shiny silver box!

That way, those "in the know" on this forum will ask questions that you will be able to answer fairly quickly, and I reckon they will have answers to the problems within a few minutes.

First thing download Firefox.

www.mozilla.com/

If this lets you get onto the internet without crashing it will help narrow down the problem.

I would have thought that 192MB is a bit on the low side to be honest....

I have just checked my work PC here, and I have 1014mB... and this machine sometimes throws a few mardies!

Well done this and links now work bounce
I'll give it a try instead of Explorer and see how it handles the other issues

the general concencus is that Firefox is a better web browser, as it is less vulnerable than Internet Explorer to some of the web's nasties.

I'd still suggest that a bit more RAM (memory) in your PC would probably help too.

I work in Nottingham, but live in Derby.... would be happy to pop and take a look at some point if you need a bit of help?

Cheers for the offer, I'm going to try and find the time to clean up the pap thats stored on here at some point, delete a load of stuff thats not used, and generally do a bit of house keeping, I'll see how it goes after all that and give you a shout if it's still playing up.

If Firefox stops the random crashing you may have to look at getting the system repaired regardless sooner or later.
Windows Update can make heavy use of Internet Explorer, so without IE working properly your ability to get software patches from Microsoft will be slightly degraded.

XP needs at least 512MB to be happy. Lots of the cheap PCs you see advertised nowadays have 256MB and its not enough - its the commonest call out I get - 'my PC's running slow' - quick upgrade to 512 and hey presto its fast again.

with 192MB you will run out of memory before you even do anything in windows, so everything will run into virtual memory on the hard disk. PC will run at about 10% of its usual speed and you may well get application errors.

Sorted.

RAM is about £15 ish for 256 you might want to consider a 512 upgrade...

Before upgrading memory etc, you need to check you have enough free disk space.

Open "My Computer", right click on the C: drive, select "Properties".

There should be more than 1GB or so free.
