Hi guys,

My sound has gone off, but only on internet stuff.

Its very odd, everything is fine when playing cd's or using iTunes and such, BUT, all the system sounds have stopped (like the bing-bong sound when you get new mail) and when I look at video on you tube for example, it plays but no noise comes out.

I have tried most things, like checking the volume is up etc. I have re-installed my sound blaster audidigy 2 software and have checked most settings on internet options and stuff but to no avail.

All was fine untill about 2 weeks ago, but no idea what it was that changed.

Virus cheaker is AGV from Grisoft and that seems fine too.

Any ideas??

Go:

Start > Control Panel > Sounds & Audio Devices > Sounds.

Looks for "New Mail Notification" it's nearish the top.

On mine in the drop downbox under nearth it says "Windows XP Notify" and has a play button.
If yours has thisor any other text in the box then press 'play' and see if any noise appears from the system.

If the 'Sounds:' dropdown is blank then someone/something has deslected various audio cues from your system... do you have children? To get them back look at the top of the screen where it says "Sound scheme", hit the drop-down box and select "Windows default". Click Ok. And you should be noisy as ever

Tried that but when I try to play any of the sounds an error message pops up saying...........

Your system cannot play the sound %..............%..........wav. Your sound card may be in use.

Looks like I have a problem somewhere, but as I say I did just re-install the Creative Audidigy 2 sound thingy CD.

confused

The drivers will tell windows what capabilities the card has and install specific software for it; but Windows itself has the core that these drivers bolt in to.
I wonder if totally uninstalling the drivers from the system and applying new ones downloaded from the internet might prove useful?

I'm half tempted to suggest looking around the Creative support forums or e-mailing their support people....

All fixed!!

The sound card had unhoocked itself and when I re-installed it, it had been re calibrated but not selected itself, so there was no sound device selected for internet and system stuff.

Very difficult to understand as most PC stuff is to me.

All ok now though.

Thanks for your help.
