I'm just setting up a website (bit of fun really, no commercial gain unless i'm very lucky!) and i'm a bit stumped as to what resolution to design it to.

The main pages will be fairly graphics based hence i need to choose my images to make the most of the screen space available. Does anyone still use 800x600 resolution or will I alienate loads of people if i gear the site to bigger than this?

I think a lot depends on your audience.

You could assume that the typical PHer runs at 1024 at an absolute minimum.

If it's more local/community focused, then you could probably assume 800 minimum.

I manage a website with over 4 million hits a day - and just over 50% are running at 800! So the site design is built for that.

800x600 is the default resolution of Windows XP.
You'd be amazed how many people turn the slider all the way down.
Best to design for 800x600.

I think you may be right here - I run 1024x768 on a pc that is almost 5 years old and feel my resolution is a bit low but I just flicked onto 800x600 and its awful! I would also agree that PH'ers are perhaps running higher specs than average so a better res could be more appropriate.

I don't really have a feel for the technical literacy of the people who would use the site so I think you may be right in that designing for 800x600 is best and then I can monitor things from there.

Some stats here:

www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp

As of Jan 2006 apparently 20% of users were still at 800x600, so if you are going to design a site at a higher res than this, make sure it at least looks ok at 800x600 even if scrolling is required.

If it were a business it might matter but if it's just for fun, then I can't see a problem going 1024 wide.

I'm using 1024x768 but only because I have a 19" monitor. When I was on a 17" I used 800x600, and anything smaller than that I want 640x480.
