I'm sure this one is simple.

I've got a Windows XP laptop connecting to a Samba based share.
The laptop has been borrowing my username (thus is can see my home area)... I've made the person their own account but how in the hell do I convince XP Pro to forget the username and password that have been put in already?

Ideas... other than a hammer obviously lol

What do you mean, was the lappy logged in under 'alan' but mapping a drive with different credentials, or was it logged in as 'thepassenger' and now you just want to log in as 'alan'?

If the former, just disconnect the drive

If the latter, and XP pro, use control pannel/admin tools/computer managment/users & groups to rename the account whilst keeping all the settings

If the latter and XP home, use comtrol pannel/users, not sure you can rename accounts though, maybe just create a new one and disable the old one?

*or* change the password on the samba box, just to be sure.

Good stuff

Ok. Sorry. I was a bit dense.
The problem is that the laptop has been using the username 'thepassenger' when accessing the Samba shares. The local user on the laptop is 'heather'.
I've created a Samba+Linux user called 'heather'.
The problem is that the laptop has been told to remember the username/password provided to it, hence even though the server is ready to accept connections it's automatically using 'thepassenger'. This saved username & password is following the local user around despite renaming it.

So... all I'm looking at doing is purging the network password cache; problem is google is stuffed full of handy hints for turning on/off this function in Internet Explorer... or selling utilities that will do it, so does anyone know how to purge this cache and in effect make XP forget the username/password it's been told to use on a network share?

Try dropping to a command prompt and do a:

net use * /d /y

Then:

net use x: \smbservershare /user:username

PH is editing my UNC paths so I've had to fudge it!
The context since I can't type it is

backslash backslash server backslash share with no spaces

Where x:= driveletter you want to map
smbserver = hostname or ip address of your smb box
share = share name
username = the name of the user you want to connect as

If the passwords on the local machine and server don't match it will ask you to key in a password. This may well overwrite the cached password. It's a bit odd to be honest, mind you, it is XP Home

Doh! I forgot about the command line.
Thanks PJ, mapping the drives and disconnecting and then reconnecting solved the problem.
Twas XP Pro as well... fairer to say "bit odd, but then it is Windows" lol
