At the risk of setting off on another "which is best: PC or Mac" thread (Mac of course).......

Just got my new iMac and very good it is too. However, my daughter's discovered MSN but there doesn't appear to be an option to use the webcam in the iMac. It works through iChat which doesn't support MSN.....or does it?

Anyone found a way round this?

Personally I cant stand MSN. Its awful on PC's and its even worse on Macs. Just such an ugly app and those god damn animated smilie things that everyone insists on using on it get on my nerves. I honestly don't know what people see in it. I guess us Mac users get rather spoiled with iChat..
Anyway.. You can get MSN to work through iChat, but its a pain and you wont get webcam support. If you must have use of the webcam, then checkout 'Mercury MSN' and also 'aMSN'. There is Microsofts own offering of course, but its pretty weak, and as I remember, doesn't offer webcam support either for Macs.

Its not a feature that is currently covered by the official mac release of MSN messenger, but you can get another app called aMSN which gives you pretty much all the functionality of the windows version, and seems pretty stable too when i've used it. It may be worth a look if nothing else. I've found that yahoo messenger for mac seems to support web cams extremely well though, so that may also be worth a look.

I should also have added, that I would be surprised if either of the apps I mentioned work well for you. aMSN only allows video one way for a start which is rather pants. I don't think it has audio either. As for Mercury MSN, i don't remember, as it was ages ago that I used it. I just remember that being feeble as well.
If you have one of the later 'Intel' equipped macs then you could (if you wanted and could be bothered) install Windows on it, and use any version of MSN you like from there. Apples BootCamp will help here. I've used BootCamp and its a doddle to use and set up. But i would understand if you didn't want to run windows on your Mac.
There is also 'Parallels' which i dont have personal experience with. But this lets you run OS X and Windows at the same time (also only for intel macs). So thats another option. But still, a bit of a palaver if its just for MSN use.
In my opinion, iChat is light years ahead of MSN, but of course not everyone uses AIM/iChat, which as a shame as it works brilliantly for video conferencing.
All the best, P
