It happens when i'm typing anything, e.g. an e-mail, a post on PH, a word document etc.

I'm happily typing away then the cursor jumps backwards to a random point in the middle of the sentance. It's really bizarre as it seems to be totally intermitant. It hasn't happened at all on this post yet, but it's been doing it pretty much all day.

Anyone have any ideas what it could be?

Laptop you say? Maybe fat finger syndrome.... your tapping on the scratch pad by accident perhaps? Or their is a bit of dirt or hair randomly setting it off.

If your using an external mouse it's really easy to forget that the scratchpad is still operational, don't it more often than I'd like to admit

I guess i could be hitting the scratch pad but i've had this lappy for almost 10 months now and i've never done it in the past. (Nor have my fingers got any fatter ). I was more concerned that it could be some kind of key logger going back over what i'd typed perhaps.

I've had this on all Dell laptops with the touchpad set up and it's the most annoying thing. If you don't notice you can wipe out big chunks of text because sometimes it selects text and one unaware keystroke and its all gone (hit the 'undo' if you noticed in time). It seems to be due to an oversensitive touchpad that picks up even the touch of the palm around the touchpad area. Every time it happens I type for the next few minutes without touching anything but the keys and look like some bunch of finger-fairies dancing on the keyboard! Eventually gravity and laziness take over....

When I remember I always move the cursor to the title bar at the top of the screen while I'm using my laptop keyboard. That way I don't risk losing stuff.

My Latitude X300 doesn't seem to have any means to change the sensitivity of the touchpad although a brand new Inspiron 6400 that arrived last week has one.

If you're worried about that run a fun virus scan and spyware scan

Not likely to be a key logger, they are usually a bit more stealthy that that. I would suggest it is probably a harware fault on the keyboard. The best way to test it is to either plug in an external keyboard and bang away with that for a day and see what happens or load up word and tap away on each key several times to see if you can get it to jump. That may help.

Have you got a nipple as well as a touchpad? If so, turn off the click on tap option.
