Brain picking time (probably Jamies) hehe
The gaffer has come up with an idea. Essentially, he wants us all to have access to the same files, so we are singing from the same song sheet. His suggestion was to set up a server in our office. The problem with that is an awful DSL connection as we are right on the edge of broadband reception. Max upload would be 25kbish if lucky, plus the pain in the arse of me having to maintain the damn thing.
My thoughts are, signing up with a reliable webhost (anyone recommend someone hehe ) sticking a website on the front end, and having secure/password protected access to files for all our employees on the back. Obviously, me uploading via ftp and setting folder permissions etc isn't a pain, but getting our AOL subscribing contracts manager, and other less aware individuals will be.
Is it possible to connect using internerd exploder for preference, and be presented with a file structure that can be accessed, and saved to with ease. Getting these guys to use an ftp client would be nigh on impossible banghead
The option to have files booked out and unavailable until saved again would be a godsend.

Righto guys, any suggestions/solutions/software that will get me started ?
Thanks in advance.

Phil

Leftfield suggestion.

Google for G-Drive (I think thats what its called, will check in a mo)

It allows you to use a GMail account as a drive in Windows explorer.

2Gb of space free.

Worth a look...

You could simply have a server with Samba / Windows Folders shared.

you then MAP these to your local desktops and bobs your uncle, you have a new communal Z: on which you can all drag / drop files

different permissions could be assigned to different folders and users to stop some people seeing other peoples data..

Speed would be as fast as your DSL line could handle.

Drop me a mail if you fancy more info.

Jamie, YHM.

Looked at the google drive, but would be useful to start our web presence as well. Might still be some sort of option though.

You could also consider SSL-VPN combined with MS SharePoint for top-notch security, access anywhere and the ability to check out and check in files. I'm happy to advise if you want more info.

Thanks for your help guys, it looks like it will end up being a server sat in here with me. It looks like the cheapest solution to a really small problem. Will carry on nagging him to get signed up for a VDS though Jamie.

Cheers
