Got about 15k emails in my deleted folder. Might this be why its acting up, ie:
not moving emails from sent folder to deleted folder
and
now not letting me delete emails, even from the deleted folder?

I know I know, I should be using outlook instead...

The total isn't 16,384 by any chance?

Does it support WAB? Free? Does everything OE does?

I would suggest that you've hit some sort of limit built in to the code. Much like a Outlook .PST file hitting 2Gb and going bang.

I've personally never seen OE pushed this hard so I'm don't honestly know if Microsoft have ever put out tools to fix it. I'd suggest giving this a whirl.

1. Find out where OE keeps it's files.
2. Quickly create a spanky new system account; then configure OE to pull mail from 'somewhere'.
3. Copy the 'Deleted Items' file it makes so say C:
4. Log back in to your main Windows account and replace the 15k full Deleted Items with the blank one.
5. Cross fingers and open OE.

Edit to add:
A quick surf around the internet doesn't give any clear indication of their is a limit or not, some suggest that like old versions of Outlook it explodes at 2Gb, some suggest that it just keeps on trucking until it runs out of disk space.

4.9Gb here and rising.

Outlook 2003 Supports much larger files.

Im taking the slowly slowly approach, deleting batches of emails from clients alphabetically. Ive got over 25'000 emails all in all my folders, its going to take some time.

If there was a strict 2 gig limit built into the code, its not obviously apparent. Ive deleted thousands of emails and it seems to be working better, but still not perfectly.

cant you just right click the Deleted Items folder and choose to Empty it?

Or, just delete the Deleted Items folder from the Mail Store Folder (tools maintenance iirc on OE will show you where the files are located.)

If I recall Outlook doesn't give any warnings about the PST file size and just dies when you hit the limit.

However, if it's not a file size it could be that the search functions can't handle that amount of e-mails. Still at least it's letting you slowly delete them.

Just a thought, but might be worth purchasing a PDA for the Outlook licence that comes with it? Outlook 2007 VERY easy in terms of UI.

Thanks for the help everyone. I have an update.

Some time ago mails stopped moving over from the outbox into the sent folder. It was a pain, as Id have to remember to delete them manually from the outbox or they would (often) get sent more than once.

I couldnt delete a batch of emails from the sent folder, and after deleting 15'000 or more emails, some from the sent folder some from the deleted folder and restarting OE for the third time when OE reported it couldnt read some of the emails, the sent folder suddenly appeared empty.

I manually removed the sent folder dbx file which which was clearly visible in windows explorer even though the sent folder appeared empty - it was 2 gig by this time - and now I have no sent emails, but everything is working just once again. And emails are going from the outbox into the sent folder.

Sorted! Athough I lost a few emails. Which I cant be arsed to recover so Im gonna let em go.
