I have a Dell, Pentium 4 desk top, with an external CD burner. When I try to use this with nero, I get message that I need USB 2.0 for the programme to work properly. Is this an upgrade or do I need hardware. Thanks very much.

Are you using XP?

Win 2000 didn't support USB2.0

Your motherboard needs to be USB 2.0 for it to work, failing that buy a USB 2.0 card and plug it into that.

And you should check in your BIOS that USB2.0 is enabled, if the option is there.

I found with an external burner that it made coasters at full speed (8x) but were fine at 4x

This was a Dell Inspiron, 512mb memory, 2.0gb processor (from work)

It depends, if you're running Windows 2000 then you might need to use the driver CD that came with the burner to install an updated USB driver to support USB2.

However depending on the age of your computer you might not have USB2 ports or more confusingly not all of the ports avaliable are USB2 if they are fitted. If your using the ports on the front facia try plugging it in to the one on the back.

If this doesn't work then your going to need to buy a USB2 PCI card, shouldn't cost that much and you can find them at your local parts place or PC World, install that (and any drivers if you need to) then plug the burner in to the ports on that card.

Isn't it the case that USB2.0 hardware only operates at USB1.1 speeds through Win2000? At least that was my experience when trying to get USB2.0 to work.

Depends on the service pack. SP4 for Win2k did add updated USB 2.0 functionality; but it can be rather hit & miss... kind of like XP-SP1 and WiFi With 2k it's best to hit the machine with SP4 AND the native drivers for the product rather than letting Windows sort itself out as per XP.

K. Although if it's a video ipod your in for a shock... as it'll display an error on the screen. Latest ipods are USB only; doesn't apply to older generations though.

No, it's a Photo. Not an issue any more as I have Media Edition.
