trying to spec out a system for a friend, got the actual physical hardware sorted, but they have asked about basic drawing and photo editing software for their children to use with school projects.

I only know the high end systems for both vector and bitmap, but they dont have the sort of money to go buying those, just looking for reasonably competant (i.e. not Paint!!!) but quite inexpensive software for both types. Any suggestions?

PaintShopPro isn't bad and you can pick it up fairly cheap on eBay if you wanna be legit.

GIMP is the de facto standard for this kind of thing if you don't want to pay. I have used it for years and it is excellent, but the interface can be a little complicated sometimes IMO.

Cheers for those, will pass on the recommendation, though I'm not sure how she'll feel about telling her 7 yr old to go play with the gimp hehe
