Ubuntu is the flavour of the month, but I couldn't get it to install on my main machine, whereas CentOS (a free distro of Red Hat) installed fine so I'm using that.

The Knoppix Live CD is a good distro to use to see if your machine will run Linux and is good for troubleshooting other installs, I'm told.

(Blimey! You'd think I knew what I was talking about from the above whereas I'm actually a Windows guy just paddling in the shallows of Linux)

Only tested your candidates for some days, and this longer ago, so can't comment.

I use Xine for multimedia files on my installation. I Can view all vids, albeit not embedded in the browser (didn't bother to research), and mp4 and AAC files are no problem to listen to either.

Going with Fedora core 5... not got the disk space to copy everything off so going to boot live first and manually prune all the old system before installing, wish me luck I think I'l need it!!

I like Ubuntu. The live CD is nice as a 'tester'. It installed really easily (in fact, so easy the OH managed to install it....but the less said about that the better )

I prefer Ubuntu, however download the install/live cd's for both and have a play with them. Though do it before you have moved all your files back. Ubuntu has the excellent software installer allowing you to get hold of software really easily. (Talking from previous experience of switching from Ubuntu to mandriva then back to the latest release of ubuntu)

Ubuntu is Debian-based so should have some advantages of familiarity.

I'm now typing this in FC5 - I don't hang around me you know

First impressions - the logos and colour scheme is pretty. Everything seems to be working, except it feels a bit slow without the proper nvidia drivers. Thats the next job I think!

CentOS... I didnt think of using that cause I assumed it wasn't as spangly and up-to-date as FC5?

Thanks for the advice all!

newer and with better support / stability / drivers.

It's the opensource Redhat 'enterprise' version.

but it's sacrilege to use Linux with a Gui so I'll leave this thread now.

Ubuntu

Out of those two.

I use CentOS for Asterisk but as thats web based admin in the main the OS is fairly transparent. Seems to work alright though.

Arse, didnt know that - thought it was just old school solidness, (which is fine for servers and other peoples computers, but I wanted spanglyness dammit)

Will do some checking and possibly repeat this excersise @ the weekend... rolleyes

If its any consolation I just had to spend 1/2 an hour @ the prompt installing the nvidia graphics drivers...

./*.run
access denied... chmod +x
./*.run
sorry, please install binutils...ok
./*.run your x server is still running... please quit it. ok
init 3
./*.run
sorry, please install gcc... ok
./*.run
sorry, please install 'kernel-sources'... not ok, no such package. google.. its kernel-devel.i686 ok.
./*.run ... random errors ...err ok?? ... works.

This is on fresh default install of one of the most popular desktop distros! pretty crap innit really?

Nothing like posting:

Used to do that at IBM to wind up the developers, was good to see their heads explode

I manage maybe 400+ *nix boxes (FreeBSD, Redhat, Debian, CentOS, FC, Gentoo etc)

not one has a GUI on it...

GUI = Use Windows

Tivoli, BMCPatrol... Sitescope *spit* or roll your own solution?
Dunno how many boxes I looked after to be honest; mixture of AIX, Solaris, Win2k, we counting physical units or do virtuals count as well?

edit: darkstar's just this weenie little NAT/Samba machine kicking around here, headless and running Gentoo.

The following website is really handy if your using Fedora

http://stanton-finley.net/fedora_core

As for video drivers, the Livna repository has upto date RPM packages for both nvidia and ATI.
Setting up the repository, etc is covered in the insallation notes at the above website

A small installation, then? I help manage over 2000 boxes in the UK alone.

aah but I OWN them That's only the nix boxes, not the solaris / windows / unmanaged boxes, but I never said it was large but it keeps me comfy

There is no legitimate reason to use a gui on nix in a hosting / server environment, it's just a waste of resources imho.

nix is a stunning OS, which does what it's designed to do very well, but it can never and will never stand a chance of beating MS at what it does best, which is GUI's

but I cba debating it
