Attempting to move into the 21st Century and install broadband.

Does the cable that connects the router to the telephone socket on the wall need all 4 wires (red/black/yellow/green) or will a 2 wire cable with the red/black only do (ie the one I'm using at the moment for my dial-up modem connection?

Assuming your geting ADSL installed, the router will plug in to a microfilter that goes in to your phone socket. The telephone also goes in to the filter.
It's a good idea to get a filter per socket in use that'll be on the same line as the ADSL; other wise 'odd' things can happen (internet drops when a call is made, static on the line whilst talking).

Tried to reply just now but for some reason my connection just went down ...

Mine has 4 wires. Even if your phone extension has 4 wires it might not work, for ADSL you need good quality copper wires not cheap aluminium ones, and in practice you're advised to avoid using any extensions at all. Your new broadband modem should come with the right cable to connect it to a splitter, and the filter will plug straight in to the master socket.
