"Up to 8 megs broadband" is being installed today. They call it that, because no one ever gets 8 megs (according to BT business broadband, who provide the service uncapped )

They ran a test on the line and said I might end up with 4 megs++ but not 8. I asked the lady what the max she had seen was, and she said... 6 megs. ie no one gets 8 megs, at least she has never seen anyone with more than 6, due to the quality of phone lines.

What does everyone here have. And of those of you that know actual speeds, what do you achieve? And who has signed up for an 8 meg package and only ended up with 4 or 6 megs?

On my 1 meg line, I get exactly 120kb down and 30kb up when connecting to fast servers. If tests show that Im going to end up with 4 megs due to my line quality, am I likely to get 480k down and 120k up? Im hoping my upload speed wont remain at 30k...

Signed up to 8, but only get about 3.5 to 4.5. Pretty much what I expected and better than my old 512.

I'm with PlusNet and when they upgraded me my modem said it was connected at 8.1Mbps. I've had it a few months now and the line speed has settled down to about 7.6Mbps. It all depends on how far away you are from a junction box/exchange and how good the actual cabling is.

(BT actually told a friend of mine that the street light outside his house may interfere with his speed laugh )

Nope, regular line. 1/2 mile from exchange though. LLU exchanges have been able to offer higher speeds for yonks. Bulldog's been offering 20+ in London for a couple of years. BT are woefully inadequate in terms of broadband provision.

22 megs is still quite special tho, even 1/2 mile from exchange there is chance that alot of the run in still in lead cable.

With BTs network tho it is a lottery, i know of places that struggle to get a line working for a week without a fault, but obviously do have good bits of network

I'm with BT. Not sure of the speed of the line, but my download speeds max out at around 250k a second, depending on the source.

To be quite honest, it's a bit of overkill really and I really don't utilise it as much as I should Mainly because the amount of content you could download at that speed in a day would keep you occupied for about a month

You start to find other parts of the internet are the bottlenecks too, so achieving speeds like that across the board is impossible.

Used to be about 4mb until I bought a £15,000 power lead for the modem. Now I can see webpages exactly as the author intended.

Highly recommended.

I am convinced that the colours on some websites are not as sharp as they could be and the sound quality of songs I download just isn't there for me, so where can I get one of these? Do you also need high quality network cables? Can you get them for under £10k?

I've got a nice 8Mb line at home which can be upgraded to 24Mb. The thing is, in the past cable was always considered unreliable, but now it's bloody quick and very good. Never had a problem with it apart from the first cable modem going up in smoke.

Btw.....Bulldog, C&W are both cable services and Bulldog is actually C&W. I'm guess UKOnline uses a cable service too?
