skype, whats the crack?
Discussion
use it all the time.. its great!
Skype-skype is free - i dont know the minimum connection rate you need for a good conversation though - but 56k probably is too low.
On skype.com they have the call costs for each country, so you can work it out - and if anything, its better quality than landlines..

i use skype day in day out for calls and teleconferences with up to 10 people ...
and to India and Malaysia!! (Also regluar calls to Singapore, USA, Netherlands, Japan and Norway)
find its briliant ...4 hours talk time during peak hours UK time and less than 50p!!! The line is as clear as any other line to India too.

Planet Talk Instant is 7p/min, less than both Skype Out and BT. I use them to call the US from home all the time, no problems.
If you're serious about implementing a VOIP solution look at Asterisk (or the all in one implementation that is TrixBox)
Functionality knocks Skype into a cocked hat.
Skype uses a proprietary protocol whereas most other VOIP provisioning is delivered using SIP (Session Initiation Protocol)
So in a true VOIP to VOIP environment if you use Skype you will only be able to recieve free incoming calls from other Skype users.

guess i must be lucky.
never the less, quality is cracking!!!
Anyone got Skype number with area code for another city or country that they don't live in.
If so does it work out cheaper to call/receive from India if you have an Indian number? Only wondering on behalf of the person who started this thread. I've got an 0207 number to suggest I live in London. I know it's sad. If you want one yourselves be quick because they are proving very popular.

yes. i have a florida number that terminates where-ever i'm logged in which is usually the uk. and it terminates on the three machines that are running my skype login - eg all three ring simultaneously.
we've also tested this, by having two machines with my skype account running, and dialing the number from two different phones. iirc we got both calls to answer on seperate machines, effectively giving you a small call centre.

Interesting.... I'm another one with a non-local number, although I haven't made as much use out of it than I should so I may not renew it when the time comes.

Miles better than skype and you can use your pc to make the call and your landline to talk to the other party during the call avoiding any of this headset crap! 8ppm, but many other countries are totally free including the UK. There is just a 1.5p connection fee and that's it.
You also have www.voipbuster.com which is part of the same group but sometimes with different prices.
Enjoy!
