Need pointers on PoE wireless access points.

Only requirements are that they need to be pretty-ish (i.e. unobtrusive and fairly easily concealable) and as small as possible.

Anyone know of anything?

My first port of call mate, as always.

Could be a go'er on top of kitchen cupboards/bookshelves...

Was looking for something more like an alarm sensor if you see what I mean, had a poke, not found anything as yet though.

Mark, as an alternative would something like the ANT24D18 mated to an off le shelf DG834 equiv (or corporate equiv) give the required boost to get a wireless signal around a substantial Edwardian property if sited in a central location?

Dont need the injector, will use a Netgear switch for that (if required)

Just need to get a wireless signal around a big old house.

Access points were my first thought but a beefy antenna in the main atrium may do the job I'm thinking.

Note to self: Read the post properly banghead

Have you got any wireless survey software? It's better than guesstimating as you can give the client a guide to speeds in various locations.

We had ProSurvey and I was going to try and "help" but apparently it needs a dongle which we've no longer got. Allows you to overlay maps with speed/coverage etc.

Could it be worth trying to blag an eval of something? It does take all the guesswork out of it.

My colleague jury rigged an AP onto an extendable tripod and fitted it with a rechargeable power source. Meant he could wander round a bare site and pop the AP into it's rough intended location whatever the sites condition. Made for very rapid and accurate surveys.

Just took a piccie to give you some food for thought. PM me to remind me to send it!

Hi Matt, sorry, I'm a bit late to the party on this one.

Good Antennas are the key to something like this.

You didn't quite mention what you want to connect to th AP. If it's a laptop then you are stuck with the simple fact that it's a two way conversation, so no matter how much power you pump out of an AP, if the AP can't hear the lappy... not trying to teach you to suck eggs here you understand...

If you just need a Point to Point link then it's very easy - big antennas.

Alternatively, you could consider deploying a a few AP's and linking them together using WDS (Wireless Distribution System) - this however can cause problems in that everytime you add an AP to a WDS network you halve the bandwidth. (Everyone has to shutup whilst the APs exchnge data) Not too much of a problem if you only need 2 APs as they can both act as APs to clients and still exchange data with each other. But it rapidly degrades once you get a few of them in the mesh.

Another way is to provide a high power/big antenna WDS backbone on one channel and then deploy local APs running on a separate channel at a much lower gain, servicing the clients. Obviously it costs a bit more as you're doubling the number of radios but as a solution it works extremely well (and can save you a whole heap of hassle)

Second thing to look at is hardware. I run all my stuff on LinkSys WRT54GS boxes as there is an alternate firmware (SVEASoft) that allows you to tweak the power of the radios and do way more than the linksys firmware offers.

Also, if you are planing to utilise high gain antennas you need to consider the case where the AP operates Antenna Diversity Switching. Essentially this means that you need to be able to turn off the second antenna or it may start trying to transmit on the low gain aerial.

Best bet might be to drop me a line, I've been through the living hell that is Wireless Deployment backwards and I've still got the scars. There is so much you need to take into consideration (any baby monitors in the house?)

I can also get hold of high gain antennas for you at a reasonable price and help out with rf cable selection/building.

Like I said, there's a whole lot to consider, sometimes it's really simple and everything just works, other times you could spend weeks trying to get something like this to operate sucessfully and CONSISTENTLY (you don't wantto be getting a call out every fews days whe nit stops working).

Drop me a line and we'll have a chat on the phone.

best
Ex
