Any one help?
Recently I have found my connection speed is faster when I use a cable to connect to my router rather than my wireless connection.
I use 54g wireless.

My NTL connection is supposed to be upto 10mb, I get near to that when using cable, but only about 6 when using wireless.

Any ideas?

Sounds bout par for the course, you'l only get about 10-15 Mbps when you're sat right next to the router with 54g.

but why would there be a difference between the two.
Ok the lan is running at 100mbps, but surely 54 is fast enough.

I was more concerned with settings, as my speed check always used to show 9-10 mb net speed.

Its like driving from A to B. A direct route is quicker than going via C

Our home network connects at 10mb via cable and between 4-5 mb via wireless so pretty much in line with yours..

Wifi connections never reach their theoretical maximum unfortunately, all kinds of things like interference, reflections will affect performance.

I appreciat what is being said, the thing that confuses me is it used to perform close to 10mb over the wireless.

Could be anything from local inteference (cordless phones, video senders, many home appliances use the same spectrum) or reflectance (metallic objects inside walls, large electrical appliances, etc).

You could try moving the router around, even a few inches can make a big difference.

How many things do you have 'attached' wirelessly? and has that changed since you were getting the higher speeds? I find the 54Kpbs of whatever it is is not per device like wired network with say 100mbps per device but more 54 then spread that between anything that's there.

Have you enabled security, where you didn't have it before? Also make sure the router firmware and wireless 'card' driver is up to date.

I only had my laptop on today when I was trying it.

The security is wep ,which I have always had set up.

Just cant understand why the LAN gives me full speed , yet the WAN doesnt.

What and where can the restrictions be?
I stood with my laptop next to the router and the speed was the same.

Puzzled.

Try changing the channel that the wireless uses. Could be that there's interference from new devices nearby.

..because it's busy doing all the radio stuff, which the piece of wire doesn't have to worry about.

WLAN kit does vary a lot, basically depending on whose chips are inside it and how good the aerials are.

RIght, tried changing the channel, hasnt made any difference?

Anybody know of any programs that can analyze the WAN and see if there are any restrictions?

Why is it a problem anyway - what are you trying to do across the link? It's really only going to be an issue if you're constantly transferring massive files.

Its not a problem as such, just cant see why I would get full 10ish with LAN and less with WAN, when I USED to get full with WAN.

Just to double check: are you saying that because it's actually auto-negotiated 54Mbps between your PC and your router, or just because that's the nominal maximum speed for 802.11g?

When I hover over it , it reports 54 speed.
Sometimes 48 , but not very often
