Getting an occaisional failure on the PC which has been diagnosed as a dodgy motherboard which as its 5+ years old I can't complain about. Looking to reuse a fairly new 60gb disk as a backup so I need 2 IDE slots and have found what looks to be a reasonable motherboard - Foxconn N570. Only thing is, I cannot find any reviews on this - anyone got any experience? Looks to me like the 590 came out very quickly after the 570 so people just didn't buy/review them..

Secondly, seem to be having an issue with my wireless router - needs switching off half a dozen times a day as I loose connection between it and my pc, pda and/or phone. I presume these things just have a lifespan of a couple of years then give up the ghost?

5 years old isn't that old. Find a mate who's into PC's and get him to give it a good spring clean and replace the thermal compound on the CPU heatsink.
I no nothing about the Foxconn sorry.
Have you any other wireless stuff in your house that could be upsetting you router?

Foxconn... for when you positivley absolutley have to get the cheap as chips OEM. They're more the Beko of the Mobo world. So if it's going to work it'll work for all of eternity and if it's going to break it will break quickly.

But yeah, to be honest find a friend who fixes these things and bribe them (curry, beer... illicit substances... whatever your and their poision is) and they'll spend an hour or so fixing it and/or finding replacement parts for you to spend cash on. Hell if you work for a company with IT support staff who are competant... ask them if they'll do it for the afforementioned payment. You'd be amazed how quickly the moody sods will cheer up if you dangle a six pack of Stella infront of them

As for the wireless droping, it's one of those it could be anything sort of problems. Depending on what make it is, firmware revision and the amount of memory the thing has inside it could be that so much data is being pushed through it that the little thing crashes out. It could be heat... is the unit in direct sunlight? Or perhaps power issues... try a different socket/power strip for the beast.

And as pointed out in another thread if another wireless device has appeared on the same channel that's in range it can cause all sorts of weirdness, do a quick scan with the WiFi software on your PC/PDA and see if a new network has sprung up.

Existing motherboard and chipset work ok, but I've had to do a complete software rebuild a couple of odd crashes. Neither are really up to what I need now, hence the upgrade. Mate who builds PCs suggested Foxconn as one that would do what I needed but not break the bank. Sounds like a rethink needed.

Wireless problem is due to someone else on same channel, sorted now thanks.
