I've set up a machine with Windows 2003 Server SP1 connected to LAN and working fine. I've added a Linksys USB wireless adaptor and connected to my WLAN.

However, if I unplug the LAN I lose network connection and cannot ping anything. Although it is still connected to the WLAN I just cannot get the internet working.

I've tried disabling DHCPMediaDetect but that didn't help.

Any ideas?

Need to check whether the wireless interface is still up, whether you have a default route out over it, whether you can reach a DNS server over it.

Check and double check your WEP / WAP settings.

Once I've unplugged the cable, the wireless adaptor still has the static IP assigned, but I cannot ping the default gateway or DNS servers.

The network connection says I am connected using WEP? Every other device I use wireless in the house works fine (3 laptops, 2 PDA's, 3 mobile phones).

What's the result of 'route print' before & after unplugging the wire?

So the ethernet adapter is 192.168.1.6, what is:

192.168.1.7
192.168.1.8
192.168.1.9

I can see you've got two wired cards in there, but they shouldnt show up there if they're not active. Still that doesnt explain 3 network cards and 4 IP's... Weirdness.

How about disabling all the cards in device manager, rebooting then just enabling the wireless?

.106 is the LAN
.107 is the Wireless adaptor
.108 & .109 are VMWare virtual adaptors

Could try two things

first thing

change the metric of the wireless connection to less than the vmware interfaces
Its in the tcp/ip properties/advanced page, set to automatic by default. Change it to 15.

second thing

on the 'network connections' screen (my network places properties) go to 'advanced' and then 'advanced settings' and make sure the wireless adapter is at the top.
