Is this possible?

We have a linksys wireless router which has historically been connected via ethernet to NTL, desktop and NAS box. We've just ditched NTL and moved to Orange broadband.

The Orange modem is also a wireless router, so the laptops all point to that now. But what about the NAS and desktop? The Orange router uses WEP encyption only (so no Mac filter) which I think is hard wired in. Is there any way to point the Linksys router to the Orange router?

<bump>...

Anyone know if/how you can tie 2 routers (well one gateway, one router) wirelessly?

If I get this right both Q's are asking if it is possible to wirelessly connect 2 routers together (regardless that one of them is also a modem). This is only possible if they have a bridging facility on them (some do but highly unlikely) otherwise I am afraid it aint possible.

If you looking to connect more wired clients on i would suggest a small 4-6 port unmanaged switch and pop that in the 2nd Ethernet port of the orange box. The orange box only has two ports... Failing that there might be a modem/router with more ports as standard such as a netgear one ?

EDIT: just read above they are at the other end of the house.... you could fit wireless NICs in the PC's and add them onto the network that way (if the signal is good enough), - personally i'd run some Cat5 though and add a switch in.

Buy a us robotics wireless gaming bridge (since its the cheapest and probably one of the best), and connect it to one of the ethernet ports on one of the routers, that can bridge the two. The two wireless routers would need to occupy seperate wifi channels however. Would cost you about 60 quid for the bridge

Thanks all - just to explain...

The Orange modem/wireless router is in the lounge at the front of the house (next to the telephone port). The NAS and desktop are wired in to the Linksys in the spare bedroom at the back (also the study).

This leaves the options of either wiring an extension to the phone upstairs (how would this effect broadband speed?) or cabling ethernet down the the stairs.

How about using 2 wireless cards to access internet and NAS at the same time? idea

If your linksys is a wrt 54g try putting a custom firmware on it and using it as a wireless client...

I use Hyperwrt just flash the new firmware and set it to wireless access point in the web config screen, enter password/SSID and it connects to my WPA2 draytek WLAN.

Lots of howtos on the web.
