I'm led to believe that I need at least 1 static IP address so that I can remotely access my cctv system.I have 1 pc and 2 wireless laptops connected to my "network". I'm currently with BT Business and have 5 static IPs and pay £100/month + VAT!!!!!

I get the feeling that I could solve my problem in a much cheaper way, but as I struggle to find the on/off button, it's all a bit of a mystery!

All I want to do is surf the net quickly, use e-mail and be able to access my cctv, what service should I use?

My router blew up a week or so ago and BT were useless, saying I needed a new one, I bought a Belkin ADSL2+ modem with G Plus MIMO Router, but it was only with their tech line support could I install it!!And I can't get the cctv connection (Cat5) to work! The range is pants, I can't get more than about 20 metres away before the signal drops out!Any suggestions to improve the range?

I also have a 2 month old Sony Vaio VGN tx2p which is slower than my old Sinclair Spectrum!

If anyone fancies a blast out in an F430 as a passenger (I spent all the insurance money on BT Broadband!!!) in exchange for sorting out my computer life, feel free to volunteer!

Otherwise some sound PH Interweb advice would be greatly appreciated!

For the best customer support in the business, or very close to it, take a look at IDnet, www.idnet.co.uk They also off a static IP.

Have you scanned the PC for spyware? Ad-Aware or SpyBot are a good place to start, also scan the PC for viruses.

http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatSectio may help setting up the router

DynDns do a free service for dynamic IP's. So you'll be able to get to your system by entering say: wibble.dyndns.org.
You'll probably want to use this even if you get a static IP assigned as it's much easier to remember.

Sony laptop that's brand new running like a dog. Ok. Start > Control Panel > Add Remove Programs. Anything in there that you don't use? Like AOL or bumf that Sony pre-install. Acts of Genocide will be your friend.

Download Firefox, SpyBot S & D, AdAware, AVG (or nod32), install them, then allow them to get updates. Run each one in turn and let it kill anything it finds that is dodgy.

Remove anything that starts up on boot that you don't need/want/use all that often.

Wireless signal... dunno. Try playing with the antenna and moving the thing around the room. If possible try putting it some where high up as that might help. Make sure that the WiFi card your using has the same feature set, MIMO router will require MIMO NIC to work it's magic otherwise it'll fall back to whatever is avaliable (usually 802.11g I'd guess).

Edit to add: What's an F430? Seriously.

They also block incoming port 80, so i assume the CCTV access would be affected.

Plotloss and thepassenger have it IMO. I use DnyDNS for my home address (NTL broadband) to allow me to remotely access other machines and access my home facilities from elsewhere and it works a treat.

The only real caveats are that your router will need to support DDNS (which most do these days) and the free service from DynDNS requires you to periodically check in with their website otherwise your subscription can expire. I have been caught out by the latter once, but renewing it was no problem and the pay service is cheap anyway if you can't be bothered updating it.

No they don't. Nor port 443.

Thanks to everyone for your replies, I'll try to fathom them out tomorrow when I won't have been in the pub for hours!

It's greatly appreciated!

Bearing in mind that this is a motoring forum, I did chuckle a bit at this:

And to answer the other question, I'm in North Herts/South Beds!

Bugger, alas a bit far for me to drop in and give you a hand.

The router should have a section for a dyndns or equivalent service, should be fairly easy to set up.

You sure? A major reason why I don't use ukonline is that they block ports 25 and 80. Joust on here works for them and his response when I commented on this some time ago gave me no cause to believe that the situation was likely to change.

But the CCTV server could be run on any old port, since there's no requirement for Joe Public to be able to access it, so it wouldn't matter in this case.

owa on my exchange server works fine (uses both 80 and 443). Been using ukonline for ages and it has always worked.

If its a decent DVR then it should allow you to select a port other than 80 for the webserver.

Np. Give it a whirl and if it's still stuffed then we'll keep poking it.
