Does anyone have a recommendation for a webhosting firm in the £10 a year category ? I know register one is great but what they offer is about 100x over the top for what will effectively be 5 static pages of text. The site will be expecting a maximum of 1GB throughput a month.

The problem with such cheap hosting is simply one of support.

It would cost more for someone to deal with one support ticket than they make in a year from you.

The Register1 VDS Std is available from £33 a yr (3-4-2 offer) is a few quid more really worth risking your hosting on?

Indeed. And true even at £33pa.

Aye, which is why I'm glad the single most commonly sold account is the VDS Pro.. on a 3-4-2 Deal

on top of the £9 setup fee.. but still, it always tickles me when rational people expect to get service for a few drink a year.. and then have the audacity to complain when it all goes t1tsup.com

If you're really that disinterested in stability then just host your websites on your own DSL connection..

IMO if a site is worth publishing on the net, then its worth the £33pa that Jamie at Register1 charges.

If you really can't stretch that far, email the guys at www.primehosting.co.uk They did a summer promotion for £15pa and will probably do the same deal if you ask nicely

Thanks for everyones help, basically the site is for a small Doctors surgery and they want the hosting for as little as possible ( I'm already doing the site as a favour pretty much) so I thought that i'd ask on here, I didn't realise that the margins on webhosting were so tight. It looks like they are going to stick it on their included broadband webspace now but thanks anyway.

If it's a non vital site, then forwarding to their broadband space is always a good starting point.

The functionality is always abysmal, but you can't beat the price

Always amazes me how little people are willing to spend on their primary web presence tho, really negates the whole point in having one

Christ alive - how tight are they that they don't want to spend £33 a year on hosting? That's £2.75 a month FFS!

If they're anything like my doctors' they'll charge more than that when a single patient requests a copy of a medical report prepared for a Life Insurance company.

I agree, I think it must be the old " If I don't understand it how can I possibly value it ?"
