Its well known that the success of the IT industry and TVR has been closley linked over the years, towards the 90's I remember going to a novell developer net seminar at netware HQ in the uk. right outside the main entrance in the visitors slots were two griff's a chim and a cerby with my old rangey parked in the middle...

I rememeber being a little envious at the time, but then it chucked it down on the way home, and I chuckled folowing them slipping and sliding up the road...

In the last few years the tvr/consultant ratio has slipped a bit but I went to a conference yesterday and tripped over a chap with a Tuscan. so hopefully the next one I go to will have a car park full of trevors and we'll all be rolling in it again....hehe

I'd say at least a third of the TVRs in the SE London area are owned by IT types (myself included), so all appears OK in this neck of the woods. Not that you'd see my Tiv at a conference anyway as I'd generally take the runaround for a journey like that.

I find more of the IT bods I speak to are interested in the techno-gizmo Jap cars these days, the purity of driving not being of much interest to them.

Yeah they'll be the ones that stare blankly when you mention a command line or anything not micro$haft hehe

I like your anecdote - and I hope you're right. I've been keeping one eye out for a new c# developer role and they seem pretty thin on the ground right now.

I was heading back to the car last week and heard a familiar, distinctive growl. Looked around and say a lovely yellow Tamora pulling into the car park. I turned to the missus and said: "I bet he's going to Maplins." And sure enough he was

I guess for me it's rather like how I percive operating systems. For a daily driver I'd like something 'easy' with lots of 'features'. The Windows of the car world as it were

And then I'd like something a touch more hard core and straight to the point for the weekends. Which I could say would be the *NIX's

"Windows can do anything a unix machine can. But sometimes you want a cart horse pulling the cart and not a thousand chickens" quote from a project manager I used to work with.

So whats with ipconfig then eh...? EH!!?!!?!

Easy to equate IT contractors to wealthy, often single, young men, who are (apart from wealthy retired gents) probably most likely to buy trevvors. The other group, city boys buy porsches I guess.

Wise man confuses the OS with the GUI.

Huh? Surely that's bass-ackwards? GUIs are fab for doing the same old crap over and over again, but the minute you need to do something clever once, there's no beating a command line.

It depends on what the 'one-off task' is. Are we talking about clearing a print queue, typing a document... or an enterprise grade billing system running a special batch job against terrabytes of SQL database?
