Hiya

I need techie help please...

I will be given a (bid) document next Friday at 12pm in Newcastle that I need to share with people in different companies in London, Newcastle and Birmingham by 5pm that day.

The document will be on 3 CDs and 3 presentation size binders, so it won't email.

I have no idea what GB size it will be.

My cunning plan is to store it on a website somewhere over the weekend, whilst copying the disks and posting them out Friday afternoon, so that everyone has a chance to read the document over the weekend. However, the Intranet of my company is not up to sharing standard/permissions!

I've looked at Yahoo groups and a SharePoint trial site but their limit is 25mb and I think this document might be slightly larger than that.

Has anyone got any suggestions please?

If each CD is full that will be around 2Gb of data.

That will take a while to upload to an online storage area assuming a 512kbps upload speed.

Can it be compressed at all or is it already compressed as it arrives on the CD?

Is each CD full or is it split into 3 'volumes' because the print version is in 3 volumes?

A CD-rom (not DVD) will hold 750mb so guess its going to be around 2GB.

Wherever you load this it is going to take a loooooong time unless you have a really good connection and then a looong time for users to download it.

However, you possibly could use my File Share system depending on how big it actually is.

Office number is on the website that is linked to on my profile drop me a line and I'll happily have a chat about what we could do.

Thanks very much!

Yes, I'm guessing that it will be in 3 volumes as that was the original bid format, but until I get it, I won't know - which is the problem!

Our system has no physical limit on size but you may not get the uploading and downloading in time for 5pm

Unless you can distill the useful and relevant bits of the bid to make them small enough for e-mail for uploading to a website, your best best might be to quickly copy the CDs and get them couriered if your company will cover the cost. Not modern, but effective.

But even then, Newcastle to London in sub 5 hours on a Friday will be pushing it...

Ali

If the documents are in word, excel, general office format and all you need to do is share them so the other users only need to review them, then you can convert them into pdf format then zip them up. This should shrink them alot.

I have web space you can use and then share them out for users to download if you soo need.

However as you know i will be off somewhere tomorrow so you need to contact me before noon Thursday so i can make arrangments for all the technical stuff to be done.

Give me a call tomorrow before noon and i'll help if you need any.

xx

Well I had to say it... Anyway just to give you an idea, *if* it is 2GB then on a standard ADSL broadband connection w. 256Kb upload that would take about 22 hours minimum. If it compresses down to 1GB then 11 hours... lot of 'if's there, you might be lucky and the CD's won't be full. If they are full then unless you've got a very fat upload where you are it's difficult to see what you could do, short of putting someone in a car - but if it takes you an hour to copy & test the CD's even that might be pushing it.

Perhaps you could call them in advance and just ask what the size of the files are? If it is in the reigon of 2GB it might be best to do a 9am saturday morning delivery.

Just a thought, but depending upon who it originates from, they may have decided to use the smaller (7cm) CDs or the poncy shaped ones in which case you need to make sure anything you use to copy them can cope.

Probably not, but I was once given an ITTs from massive (and very formal company) a on credit-card CD.

Surely if it's 3 CD's and 3 Presentation binders, the only way to get it to all sites by 5pm, is to copy it all and courier it.

I cant imagine you'll find a way to electronically transfer 3 cd's of info (if full) in 5 hours. Plus then you'll have the binders to contend with...or is the binder content on the CD's.

Sorry it's not much help.
