New pc.

Trying to open some work attachments on emails. Ones a pps file. The others a dot file. However, I cant open them up. It says

'this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the folder options control panel'.

Whats this?

I tried downloading powerpoint for the pps file, but no luck.

.pps is a Powerpoint file and .dot is a Word document template. Try opening the application first then go File then Open and browse for the file. Should do it.

I've managed to open up the pps file by doing what you said, but not the dot files.

Why cant it just open up when I get the email as I did before when I used my old pc running windows ME?

.dot files are normally hidden files that hold configuration details / settings for other applications. For example Normal.dot is where microsoft word stores all the users settings.

DOTs are Word templates used to start a base document that will be saved to a standard DOC file.

You should be able to open them if you've got Word installed, as it always created the association.

That'll be it then, you need a proper copy of Word for Windows to open the templates.

You could try Microsoft's Word Viewer, as although it doesn't mention it, it might well open the DOT files.

Open Office might open the .DOT files as well. If you're not buying into the whole Mictosoft gamut. Won't cost you a penny to try it either.

Also if you change the .pps extension to .ppt you will get an editable Powerpoint file rather than the slideshow format. Similarly if you change the .dot extention to .doc you will get a fullyt-editable Word file.

Quick Q here to save me starting a new thread!

I've had a WPS works file sent to me, and I can't open this in word even after installing the convertor thingy with Office.

It come out as the usual:

ÐÏ à¡± á> þÿ þÿÿÿ ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ

etc.. just like trying to open an image using File>Open

Any ideas?
Thanks,
Dave.
