There is a lot of old wives' tales about Plasma's. The earliest generations suffered screen burn and also had an average screen life of about 10,000 hours.

Nowadays, Panasonic offers 60,000 hours expected run time and most if not all plasma's have 'anti-burn' technology.

Also: Some people treat their screens badly and get burn in. Enthusiasts look after them. Whose last longer?

Look after your stuff - it will look after you...

From brand new they should really be run in for maximum life and best performance.

All the levels at 50% for two weeks.

After that, if as close to possible replication of image is required a calibration of the screen would be a good idea.

Then you're set.

Avoid the dynamic setting, use cinema or normal, knock the brightness & contrast down a tad is all, Mines been fine even with playing xbox games.

60,000 hours is 8 hours a day every day for 20 years, no need to worry there...

Search the net for your screen type as many differ in terms of the setting you should use (and what the factory numbers mean and settings are).

Put my Pioneer on the "run in" settings and to be honest, it doesn't really need to be any brighter/more contrasty etc. Might consider getting it calibrated after Christmas, but the picture's amazing as is.

I believe the life should be 50-80k hours. Which will almost certainly exceed my upgrade cycle, and in 5yrs+ 43" sets will be much, much cheaper anyway.

Items mentioned earlier - and obvious stuff - like NOT leaving an image on pause for hours at a time and so on...nothing onerous.

And do try NOT doing what a mate did with his shiny new Hitachi - record a film on Sky, pop it on after pub, then fall asleep. Awake in morning to the very bright lots of white lettering "finished playback screen". oops.

The Hitachi 42PD9700 has such a feature (a sort of peripheral antiburn thingy.)

The Pioneer 50-FDE doesn't. I have screen burn where the black bars are on the top and bottom of the screen!
I notice a line about 2inchs from the top and bottom of the screen, where the black bars are normally shown when the Sky is on or when a wide screen DVD is playing.

my model is the one before the newest one, so it might be image retention.

A mate of mine had the same problem.. while taking it off the wall for closer inspection and to clean it properly.. he dropped it eek

Fortunately 'twas covered by accidental damage.

Some have in built cleaners, otherwise just try leaving it displaying static for a while.

That was the one you recommended to me and my folks awhile ago. They didn't listen. Got a toshiba LCD instead. Said that a 42'' was too big in our room. I mean whats 5 inches? Nothing is it?

Seems to be okay though. Well pretty good. Cant remember the model name, something along the lines of WLT66 37 or something like that. Its the one without the freeview.
