shutdown issue
Discussion
OK, I've given up on this one ...
I have an asus a8n-vm motherboard in my pc, from new it refuses to come out of hibernantion / standby (not a massive issue as I don't tend to use these anyway), and also, on occassion refuses to shutdown. It runs through stopping windows, and seems to halt all disk activity, but doesn't poweroff.
Seems to be more likely to happen if it's been on for a few hours, or has done some processor intensive tasks.
Tryed a rebuild (still doesn't work with only the o/s installed).
I presume it's driver related, but I'm up-to-date in that area.
Any ideas,
Thanks,
Martin

Which OS are you running?
Do a search of the microsoft knowledge base http://support.microsoft.com/ for shutdown issues
and also search you mobo makers website for known issues.

I'd try updating the BIOS to the latest version, they offen fix dafty problems like this.
Also have a look around to see if there are more recent drivers available for the motherboard (preferably matched to the BIOS you are using) as it may be Windows isn't talking to it correctly. Another thing to do is check BIOS settings, I know on my Dell Dimension I had to change a setting after rebuilding it so standby didn't kill freeze the machine.
Sounds like an ACPI issue off the top of my head. Windows isn't sending a complete 'power off' command to the BIOS or it's getting lost somewhere.
If it's all of a sudden started happening check out the Microsoft URL given above, also search around to see if you updated drivers and roll them back to previous state. You might have to dredge out the Windows CD and do a repair install.
Also running a quick malware check using the usual programs might prove worthwhile; malware can cause bits of Windows to act in very strange ways.
If it's always done it since the machine was brought then perhaps trawling through the manu's website would be helpful? They often have patches and such avaliable.
